Google newly revamped results page is ccertainly simpler to use. With the left rail containing navigation tools to help you to go directly to more relevant results for your query and allows you to filter the results.

The range of searches is also increased with the books, blogs, updates, videos etc. and this will probably mean that the more content rich your site the better you may do in search in the future as users learn to use the new links and categories to even further refine their searches.
Google has even produced a new video to tell you a bit more about what they have done - though I have to say that the Google staff in it don't look entirely at their ease! Some stiff postures and cheezy grins!
Google’s plan with this new look is is to at least retain and even increase its market share. Bing’s share has increased nearly 4 % points since its 'relaunch' and Microsoft is looking for a partnership with Yahoo to join Bing and Yahoo search.
It's well know that Google does a lot of testing on it's search pages a changing just a few pixels can affect Google's profits massively. To get to the new look Google mocked up hundreds of different results pages, had many internal feedback meetings, used eyetracking studies and conducted months-long experiments with hundreds of thousands of live users.
